Test Description

Total Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is a quantitative measurement of all IgE antibodies in serum, reflecting the overall atopic and allergic burden. IgE is the least abundant immunoglobulin in serum under normal conditions (normal range: 0–100 IU/mL in adults). Markedly elevated total IgE levels are characteristically found in allergic conditions such as allergic rhinitis, bronchial asthma, atopic dermatitis, and urticaria. Extremely high IgE levels (>1000 IU/mL) are associated with parasitic infections (particularly helminthic infestations such as ascariasis, toxocariasis, and filariasis), Hyper-IgE syndrome (Job syndrome), and allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA). Moderately elevated IgE may be seen in Hodgkin's lymphoma, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome, and IgE myeloma. Total IgE is not specific to any allergen; specific IgE testing (RAST or ImmunoCAP) is required to identify the causative allergen. Total IgE levels are influenced by age, geography, and environmental exposure. Elevated IgE in a child should prompt evaluation for parasitic infections and early atopic disease.
