Heart disease is the leading cause of death in India, accounting for over 28% of all deaths. The good news: most cardiac events are preventable — and the right set of tests can reveal your risk long before a heart attack occurs.
Essential Cardiac Tests Explained
1. Lipid Profile (Cholesterol Panel)
The most important blood test for heart health. It measures:
- Total Cholesterol: Should be below 200 mg/dL
- LDL ("bad" cholesterol): Lower is better. Aim for < 100 mg/dL
- HDL ("good" cholesterol): Higher is better. Target ≥ 60 mg/dL
- Triglycerides: Should be below 150 mg/dL
2. hs-CRP (High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein)
Measures inflammation in the body. Chronic low-grade inflammation is a significant risk factor for heart attack and stroke. A level < 1 mg/L is ideal.
3. Electrocardiogram (ECG)
Records the electrical activity of your heart. Detects arrhythmias, heart enlargement, and prior heart attacks. A resting ECG is recommended as part of any cardiac checkup after age 40.
4. Fasting Blood Sugar / HbA1c
Diabetes doubles the risk of cardiovascular disease. Monitoring blood sugar is inseparable from heart health assessment.
5. Homocysteine
An amino acid that, when elevated, damages artery walls and increases clot risk. Target: < 15 μmol/L. Can be reduced with Vitamin B6, B12, and folate.
6. Troponin (Emergency Only)
Released into the blood when heart muscle is damaged. Used in emergency settings to diagnose a heart attack quickly.
