India has one of the highest rates of anemia in the world โ nearly 57% of women and 25% of men are affected. Despite being so common, anemia is often undiagnosed and untreated. Here's what you need to know.
What is Anemia?
Anemia occurs when your blood doesn't have enough healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin to carry adequate oxygen to your body's tissues. The most common type โ iron-deficiency anemia โ is both preventable and treatable.
Types of Anemia Common in India
1. Iron-Deficiency Anemia (Most Common)
Caused by insufficient iron to produce hemoglobin. Especially common in:
- Women of reproductive age (due to menstrual blood loss)
- Pregnant women (increased iron demand)
- Vegetarians and vegans (lower dietary iron from plant sources)
- Children during rapid growth phases
2. Vitamin B12 Deficiency Anemia
B12 is found almost exclusively in animal products, making strict vegetarians particularly vulnerable. Results in large, abnormal red blood cells (megaloblastic anemia).
3. Thalassemia
A genetic blood disorder more common in certain Indian communities (Gujaratis, Sindhis, Bengalis). Carriers are often asymptomatic but can pass it to children.
Symptoms of Anemia
- Fatigue and weakness โ the most universal symptom
- Pale or yellowish skin
- Shortness of breath on minimal exertion
- Rapid or irregular heartbeat
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Cold hands and feet
- Headaches
- Brittle nails and hair loss (iron deficiency specific)
Diagnosing Anemia: What Tests to Get
- CBC: Reveals hemoglobin levels, RBC count, and MCV (red cell size)
- Serum Ferritin: The most sensitive test for iron stores (low = iron deficiency)
- Serum Iron & TIBC: Iron levels and total iron-binding capacity
- Vitamin B12 and Folate: To rule out nutritional deficiency anemia
- Peripheral Smear: Microscopic examination of RBC shape and size
Men: < 13 g/dL ย |ย Women: < 12 g/dL ย |ย Pregnant women: < 11 g/dL
Foods to Boost Iron Levels
- Haem iron (better absorbed): Red meat, liver, chicken, fish
- Non-haem iron (plant-based): Spinach, lentils (dal), beans, tofu, fortified cereals, pumpkin seeds
- Pair with Vitamin C: Lemon juice, tomatoes, or amla with iron-rich meals boosts absorption significantly
- Avoid tea/coffee immediately after iron-rich meals โ tannins inhibit iron absorption
